REI

I like the store. Love the stuff. But it's still a blood sucking corporation.
I got my pack there for the trip I'm taking in LESS THAN TWO WEEKS TO EUROPE! Huzzah.
Anyhoo, the guy helping me was an earthy guy. Mountainous and all that jingle. I picked a good one. Perfect for a minimalist. Or wannabe minimalist, if you will. So like I said, like the store, like the stuff. But when all is said and done, it's still a corporation that does nazi corporate things. Case in point, we talked about travel and packs and what not. Then as I was leaving, his demeanor changed, vibe intensified, the splendor lost. Why? He had to try and sell me on this promo card deal before I left. As well as ask me if I needed anything else and make a suggestion or two. Reluctantly. Then breaking down and telling me the cheaper and more efficient way around having to fork over more money at REI for those additional things. It's ridiculous. The card thing- you pay $15, get 8% off if you pay with credit card, 10% off if you pay cash. But that discount will be mailed to you at the end of the year. Now if I have the specifics wrong, fine. Justified "not wanting to pay attention to this anyway" sentiment in tact as he was explaining this to me anyway. Whatever the case is, I heard some sort of reimbursement gets mailed to you at the end of the stinking calendar year. What is that? BUNK. Pure and unadulterated.
How would it be to be one of these earth lovers, au naturalisticos, working to promote and support a harmonious/earth-wind-fire lifestyle they themselves live and love but have to succumb to the wiles of metropolitan soul shackling (i.e. capitalism)?
I am happy about my back pack though. I'm traveling light, going full on vagabond style. Coincidentally and most appropriately, the name of my backpack is actually "the vagabond". I will stink just like the rest of them, not shave like the rest of them and get in touch with my true hobo self. Hobo to my countrymen here in this country. Countryman to all my non-countrymen there. Hm, go figure. I am so excited for this trip. I truly love to travel. It's the best. I like feeling like I'm home. And I never feel quite like home when I am home but have felt it in another country. It's hard to describe- it's a state of mind, not just being. Home- being home. Feeling home. Whatever, gotta go home now.
The End.

That is great! (That you got the pack, not the whole corporate monster of REI thing.) I am very jealous of your trip... you'll have to write about it when you get back so we can all feel like we had a little adventure. Where in europe are you going? Or is it a wherever your path takes you kinda thing?

Hobo-Richard, you are the kindest, gentlest nation the world has ever known. I will miss you as you flitter off to the Mother Land (aka Land das Muther) but I will be looking for regular photos and postings from you.

Also, I'll see you in October.

Also, did you get a camera yet?

g, my sister en la fe, my all, yes, the pack is great. i think you should come with us. we're flying into europe, heading to greece, italy, spain, portugal and france. and yes, flying by the seats of our pants in between.
richard, i can't wait to see you in oct. i hear i can take pics and get them downloaded onto cd's in internet cafes so i'll try and do that if i can. you are the kindest gentlest richard. not me, richard.
didn't get a camera yet. having a hard time deciding which one is best to get for my bone. know what i mean? any suggestions from camera people, that would be ideal. but i'll probably get one today anyway so advice moot.
much love,
richard

Wow! That sounds awesome. I am very jealous. I have a friend who recently went to Greece and said it was the most beautiful place she's ever been (and I think her new life goal is to somehow move to Greece). Have a wonderful time.
