i made a comment about 1st amendment stuff on mary's blog. i have some more stuff to say and pulled up a post so as not to deter too much from mary's friend's moving issue.
being vehemently supportive of the 1st amendment and for having that extended to all, regardless of who's using it in constructive and appropriate ways, in doing that, i want to make it clear that i in no way am for just the preposterous porn authors having their way and that's all great and dandy. i believe that if people actually turn their main focus on honoring and practicing their constitutional rights with accountability (mary made for this point to surface by the way so that's all you) then that, in my mind, is what will create a better fight for what's good than being so concerned about censoring the bad guys.
positive reinforcement, if you will. the surest way to successful discipline. exemplifying through our actions that the rights we have, we use them, we like them, they are our friends and we want to do good things with them. back lash happens, creating taboo effects and "want what we can't have" sentiments are born, rebels without a cause pop up... all when we don't mind our own business, c'mon and get happy, and trust others to do the same. it's a vicious pattern, historically formulated and in full force within this society. we're all up in everyone's business and always have been once we fled from the mother land in order to do what we wanted to do, live how we wanted to live, worship how we wanted to worship. we the people. yeah but who's "we"? "we" have lost sight of "we". it's about "i", "us", "them"... that ain't living in a free world. or a free country. forefathers set it all up and we have been fluttering around trying to make it work ever since. what a project... democracy. in's unattainable. it falls too close to tyranny. we can't handle it, we're too caught up in "i" and pointing the fingers and barbequing our cows, so make GW the despot. give him the blank check, the blank prescription, the blank code. humdehum, bbqing, bbqing, rodeos, taking the ford f-3,500,000 out, watching reality shows, upgrading our cell phones, bbqing, bbqing, guzzling, guzzling, idolizing, idolizing.... BOOOOOM. oh wait! what was that? huh? what happened? who would attack us? why do the french and every one else hate us? we're just a fun-loving, freedom fighting cracker jack group of people over here! i don't get it! that's it! i'm fighting for my right to guzzle and wave my $1.98 wal mart american flag on my front lawn. and my right to drive my ford and cow where i want to! GW, that's right, you take that blank check. pay to the order of "patriot act" in the amount of "your first amendment rights" and date it, "as long as i can keep miling fear and submission from these block head americans". GW, go ahead and take out another check while you're at it. you've got some personal agendas to entertain so make it out to "war on iraq" in the amount of "millions of iraqi families and american soldiers who set out to fight for freedom and love of country" and date it "until all oil fields and middle easters countries fall under my subjection." pretty hefty!
well, guess i better start my day off on a better note. goin swimmin! mmmm. pools. water. what a nice life.

wow.
I like showtunes.
There's been a lot of 1st ammendment discussion as of late on the morning radio show I listen to on the ride into work because of a recent FCC hire. Apparently she wants to regulate the pay services (cable and satellite radio) as well as stricter regulations on broadcast tv.
While I'm not a fan of the porn spewing, I do think that 1st ammendment right need to be upheld. If censoring gets started with one "undesirable" group, what's to prevent it from extending to everything just because the person in charge may not agree with what's being said?
Maybe people should spend more time in open discussion with their children about what they might see (since that seems to be a major concern), and in monitoring what shows their children watch, rather than putting all this effort into censorship.
g, I think you and hobo are completely in sympatico on this one. To me it just feels like a big risk to be so passive about the material being broadcast in overwhelming abundance, but I suppose it's better to educate your own and let the world go on its merry way so that you can get on with yours without infringement.
