Forbearers

She had it all on hand. I miss being spooked out by that garage but going in anyway and putting fear aside for some curiosity, nostalgia and a sense of who my grandparents are. The address on Helm in permanent ink by the phone, tools and bolts, leftover stamps from the stamp business, food storage from 1824, boxes and boxes of yarn, hooks hooked to knitted stuff that never got completed, letters and papers, appliances from 1738, black widows, the freezer freezing over with old old food or good good Big Sticks and Drumsticks.
It's going to be a year in a few months since losing this link entirely. I feel so sad still but I got the baton, got the torch. Grip tight and keep running. And while I'm at it, run it faster and make it burn brighter baby.
Sincerely,
Laura Anne O'Dougall-Doyle Nelson Lewis Eschebeck Haun Webster

Don't forget grandpa's rifle behind the fridge to the left of the garage door.
I'm glad we knew our grandparents.
