There’s this cat who lives at my complex who’s a total grump. I tried talking in my pet voice that all pets, animals, critters, babies, old people, rocks, trees, dirt, etc respond to in a most amicable way. But this time it was a no-go with this cat. I tried to have a heart-to-heart yesterday with him about his inability to love and where that might stem from (momma and daddy kitty abandoned him? negligent owner?). I kept my distance, told him I wanted to be good neighbors (he hisses at me every time I walk by) and tried to pet him. It was so hilarious and I wish I had a picture of what he was doing while I was sweet talking him: He was sitting with his side towards me, with his nose turned up, looking at me at the corner of his eye like a total snob. Like, “I don’t have to talk to you and I’m acting like I don’t know you’re there” kind of look. I walked upstairs to my apartment and looked out my window down to where he was and he was sniffing and totally scoping out where I was sitting doing my sweet talk/patting the ground beckoning him routine. It’s only a matter of time and tuna can opening before he’ll warm up.
And on that note, the chocolate pepper taste is really funky and good. In accordance with that taste, here’s a recipe. You’ll either hate it or love it. Like 50 Cent.
Black Pepper Chocolate Cookies
6 oz (170 g) butter
3/4 tsp ground black pepper
3/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground cloves
1 1/2 tsp vanilla essence
8 oz (220 g) white sugar
1 egg, lightly beaten
6 oz (170 g) flour
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder
3 oz (80 g) cocoa powder
Lightly grease a large baking sheet. Place butter, pepper, cinnamon, cloves and essence in a mixing bowl and beat until well combined. Gradually add sugar, beating continuously. Beat in egg and continue to beat until mix is light and creamy.
Sift flour, salt, baking powder and cocoa into butter mix to form a firm dough. Roll dough into small balls. Place balls on prepared sheet and gently flatten. Bake in centre of oven for 12 minutes at 190ºC. Remove from oven and cool on a wire rack.

Dude. I love everything about you. This post is a fantastic sliver of you.
And I'm stealing that line about 50 Cent.
Chocolate and pepper? Combining two of the things I hold most dear? How could that fail?
